The short-lived second generation of Ford Mustangs were unleashed on April 17, 1964 as a 1965 model. For you ‘youngins’ this was during the U.S. Gas Crisis, which forced auto manufacturers to either start using small-engines in their well-known models (like Mustang did) or completely stop making large-engine vehicles.
No one wanted large gas guzzlers, and the small economic cars from Japan and Europe became really popular in the U.S. during this time.
