The first generation of Ford Mustangs were unleashed on April 17, 1964 as a 1965 model. It was so early of a release people called it a 1964 and 1/2. But no mistake, the first Ford Mustang was a 1965, and that’s how the Mustang Anniversary should be calculated by.
After we reported this Anniversary error back in 2010, Ford changed the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang to be 2015, like it should be. This was in stark contrast to the previous 45 years of anniversary models being calculated (incorrectly) from 1964. For example, the 45th Anniversary Mustang was the 2009, the 40th was the 2004.
Does Stang Pit really have that much pull??? I like to think so, but I’m a little biased. I didn’t see anyone talk about it until I wrote that article in 2010. In a way, it makes the 50th Anniversary Mustang so much cooler and more rare as a 2015 model, since it ‘broke the mold’, so to speak.
Anyhow, back to the 1st Generation of Mustangs. They sold more than any other generation. See details on each model year by clicking below.
